THE COMMUNITY'S PRIDE

A few miles from the Edcouch Elsa High School, geography teacher Raul Valdez runs the newly renovated community center that is open a few hours in the afternoon for kids. In addition to a game room with ping-pong, weights, air hockey (and basketball outside) there is a computer room with several machines including one for editing video. We watch a 15 minute rough cut of the transformation of a ruined building into the present center. The community involvement was a seminal event, and those helping to rebuild the place are not the ones using it. It is fascinating to see the pride people have in a resource they have helped to renovate, even if they have no use for it. We talked about the youth centers in Paraguay and Spain and how they compared to the modest one in Monte Alto. Later, I sent Valdez information on training for technology center operators in Latin America and an Argentine conference where he could apply to speak.
