Rural advocates meet in first National Rural Assembly

More than 300 of the nation's rural leaders gathered in June at the first annual National Rural Assembly near Washington D.C. This pioneering effort brought together participants in the Rural People, Rural Policy initiative with other rural leaders from across the United States. The Rural Assembly is the first in several such efforts to strengthen and organize rural interests to affect policy.

On the Hill, rural voices take center stage

Rural advocates took their concerns directly to Capitol Hill at the conclusion of the National Rural Assembly. A Congressional Rural Summit, sponsored by Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, gave passionate spokespeople a chance to express their concerns about rural America 's future. Speakers gave members of Congress a first-hand view of rural America's challenges and opportunities, covering a range of topics -- health care, technology, development, education, and farm policy.

New rural publication hits cyberspace

A new online publication says its goal is promote a vigorous and honest debate about the life, culture, and social issues of rural America. That, and have a little fun.

The Daily Yonder (www.dailyyonder.com) covers rural politics, culture, economics, and policy. The site will encourage comments, conversation, and submissions from readers, while engaging professional journalists to report and edit news for a general audience.

Recent stories have covered the impact of small schools on education performance, the size of rural financial contributions to presidential candidates, and a stock index designed to track the performance of parts of the rural economy (it's called the Daily Yonder 40).
